Kalo Taro

From ancient times, kalo was the primary food of the Hawaiian people ( Kanaka Maoli ), supplemented by other principal and traditional foods: breadfruit (`ulu), sweet potato (`uala), yams, greens, ferns, fruit, fish and seaweed (limu). The Kalo, or taro, when pounded it becomes poi. Its like how potatoes are for Americans and Europeans and anyone else who eat potatoes as their main starch. The leaves are also used to wrap around fish, pork and now days beef, called Luau leaf.
